one day
I am walking down a road that cannot erupt with lava
towards a morning sun that cannot fall from the sky
I run into an ugly-looking woman I cannot fall in love with
in her hand she is carrying a dead fish that cannot be brought back to life
she uses filthy language that cannot be beautiful
at this moment I cannot grow a pair of wings and fly up into the clouds in the sky
I go home to a house that cannot collapse
and run into my father whom I cannot get along with
at this moment, I'm too big
I cannot turn myself into a rat
and quietly creep into my hole in some corner
tonight I lie down on my bed that cannot turn into the open sea
at this moment I cannot die
but I have a dream:
the sun falls to the earth
lava erupts from the ground
I fly up into the sky
kissing the sweet lips of a woman
the fish she carries in her hand is singing hymns
my father kneels down beside a ruin
and says, pointing at the sky
"what a great man he is"
next morning I wake from my dream
I cannot believe that it was real

Modern Chinese poetry in English. I thought the
poems by this guy were incredible. I dont know if
they just relate well to me or if they're universal, but
i know ive found something special. Seriously, im not
being over dramatic. My patience is usually so thin(short?) with poetry.
. ...
I fantasise about being the leader singer of this band.
Flicking from 1st to 3rd person, a small intimate venue with
crowd leaning on the stage for the quiet moments, then
sweeping out into a stadium for the chorus. Im a great
frontman in my head.

"A socialist Prime Minister with commercialism and economics
dripping off his every word - isnt this a contradiction?"

必背古诗词
For our little friends in lower middle school:
"So, facing the contradictions between his ideals and
reality, how does Li Bai extricate himself?
'Since the world can in no way answer my craving,
I will loosen my hair tomorrow and take to a fishingboat.'
Of course, from today's point of view this is running away
from reality - and sure, it is slightly negative - but with
the limitations of the time and the limitations in
understanding, how could the poet find a better way out?"
Whereas today we're all enlightened, kids, so dont you dare
go pissing around in boats- deal with your problems head on
in a scientific manner.

This story appeals to my nagging racism towards the french.

Straw man
Attacking an opponent by attributing to him/her an
implausible position that is easily defeated when this is not
actually the opponent's position.
Example: When many people argue for more democracy in Hong
Kong, a typical reply is to say that this is not warranted
because it is wrong to think that democracy is the solution
to all of Hong Kong's problems, or to say that one should not
blindly accept democracy. But those who support democracy
never suggest that democracy can solve all problems (e.g.
pollution), and they might also agree that blindly accepting
something is rarely correct, whether it is democracy or not.
Those criticisms attack implausible "strawman" positions and
do not address the real arguments for democracy.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Beautiful Moments
Each week we collect your stories, anecdotes
and lies into one handy place on the interweb.
Last week we asked for the defining moments of
your lives. Some of these are just wonderful:

* "My mother died when I was 16. Not a clean
death either - cancer and operations; a
steadily-increasing morphine dose was keeping
the pain away and my father and I understood
she didn't have long to go. I saw her stop
breathing at about twenty to four in the
morning, and, the whole sorry conclusion of
getting funeral directors to remove her and
deal with the paperwork over, I walked out
of the house at about 7am. There was the most
majestic sunrise I have ever seen that morning,
utterly massive peaks of pinks and oranges.
The memory of that sunrise has been with me
over half my life." (Yarblesnake)
* "I do medieval battle re-enactment with chainmail,
swords etc... Tewksbury battlefield 1997, the
Friday night before the main battle, there were
whispers going around the beer tent that there
was going to be a duel for honour after midnight.
It turns out that one friend had 'dishonoured'
another by shagging his Mrs. After a bottle of
Moniack mead and many happy cigarettes, I
staggered onto the field to see two very large
re-enactors leathering each other with swords
in the mist and moonlight. It was extremely
surreal, out of time - and quite beautiful.
Especially when they both bloodily agreed that
the woman in question was a slag and that they
both needed a beer..." (Catchag)
* "The sun was just rising, as I reached the summit
of a large sand dune on the edge of the Great
Thar dessert. The horizon was alive with an
awesome show of pinks, yellows and orange. It
took my breath away. Such a great view couldn't
be missed and I spent a pleasant few minutes
having the most satisfying turd in my life.
It rolled away down the dune - which made
watching the view all the better. Later on,
as we were preparing to leave, I noticed some
Americans had stood in it. It's still the best
shit I've ever had." (stupotty)
